Loss of earnings calculations for self-employed electrician

Appointment Type: Expert advisor

Service Area: Personal Injury

Industry: Construction and Engineering

Litigation Type: Civil

Acting as the expert to quantify the loss of earnings suffered by a self-employed electrician following a road traffic accident which left him unable to continue working as an electrician.

The calculations were complicated by a previous road traffic accident which impacted on the claimant’s ability to earn in the two years immediately prior to the second road traffic accident.

Prior to becoming self-employed, the claimant had been employed as an electrician by a third party company. We therefore calculated the loss of income on the following bases:

• the claimant would have continued to be self-employed
• the claimant would have returned to third party employment

The claim settled following a mediation and our report was fundamental to enabling the parties to assess the loss of earnings.
